According to a recent poll, one-third of Americans are taking a pass on necessary medical care due to rising costs; even more shocking, this number includes those who have health insurance. Additionally, one quarter said it was very difficult to pay for medical care and prescriptions that they needed. The poll, conducted by the AFL-CIO, also concluded that 79 percent of respondents believe that "health care will be a top issue in this year's presidential election." So what's a viable alternative to the system already in place? The AFL-CIO likes the healthcare proposals put forth by Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.

The answer to the unimaginative cost shift taking place by raising deductibles(read'financial barriers')is a concept called Value Based Insurance Design. If you're tired trying to manage health care cost through plan design, just admit the truth: Your health plan is an ugly baby. How ugly?
