Connecticut MDs protest takeover of Health Net memberships by UnitedHealthcare

Last month, Connecticut state regulators agreed to let UnitedHealthcare pick up renewal rights to Health Net's membership rolls. Under the plan, Health Net will stop offering health insurance in Connecticut, as well as New Jersey and New York.

However, the agreement didn't sit well with the Connecticut State Medical Society, which is protesting the decision. The CSMS has filed an appeal with the state's Insurance Department, arguing that it should have given physicians the opportunity to intervene in the November legal proceedings which sealed the deal between Health Net and UnitedHealthcare.

In addition to the medical society, Dr. Kathleen LaVorgna and society president Dr. Michael Deren have joined the case individually as plaintiffs. "The Department of Insurance needs to consider the ramifications of its decision on the patients of Connecticut, not just on the insurers doing business in Connecticut," LaVorgna told the Hartford Courant.
