CMS administrator promises more transparency

Acting CMS Administrator Kerry Weems is promising something everyone wants from the agency: openness. Weems, who briefed reporters on his policy agenda this week, concedes that CMS hasn't always shared information on key actions, and is vowing to change this. For example, the agency plans to make all corrective-action measures between itself and Medicare Advantage plans public on its website.

In addition to boosting transparency, Weems said, he is throwing his support behind ongoing quality and HIT initiatives, marketing the Part D drug benefit. He's also tightening up contract oversight, meeting with senior agency managers to review contracts with partners like pharmacies, hospitals, doctors and community organizations.
