Cleveland Clinic, healthcare employers to hire more outpatient staff in 2012

Following recent Bureau of Labor Statistics data that overall healthcare jobs are showing modest gains, hospitals and health systems in Ohio are looking to hire more outpatient workers this year, reported MedCity News.

Such is the case for Cleveland Clinic, which has seen growth in newly opened outpatient facilities. "At any given time, however, we have hundreds of open positions and are recruiting continuously," Cleveland Clinic spokeswoman Eileen Sheil told MedCity News. "There are also many open nursing positions and other areas given the size of the organization."

Thanks in part to a new suburban outpatient care center and a suburban outpatient rehabilitation center, University Hospitals plans to fill about 2,000 positions in 2012.

Ohio State University Medical Center will focus its hiring on cancer and critical care, the article noted. The major healthcare employer expects to hire between 500 and 700 clinical and administrative workers this year.

Meanwhile, the industry's shift from inpatient to outpatient services will lead to increased demand for medical office buildings, according Jones Lang LaSalle's annual forecast, reported American Medical News. The real estate company predicts most medical real estate deals will involve buying and selling properties geared toward ambulatory care, not inpatient facilities.

What's more, physicians looking to lease facilities could find good deals with the growing supply of medical office buildings and nonmedical commercial properties that can be converted, analysts said in the article.
