Two Chicago-area physicians have been charged with fraud, with one being accused of collecting more than $13 million from Medicare and private health plans for treatment that was never provided.

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald alleges that cardiologist Sushil Sheth used patient names, insurance data and dates when patients were admitted to hospitals to create false bills. He contends that Sheth wrongly billed $8.3 million to Medicare and $5.1 million to other insurers for intensive cardiac care on multiple days during the hospital stays.

Meanwhile, Fitzgerald charged Otto Garcia Montenegro with healthcare fraud for an alleged scheme under which his Chicago-area clinic submitted false claims to the tune of about $500,000 to exhaust patients' deductibles as well as collect payment.
