Charitable giving to healthcare drops

Charitable giving was at or near an all-time high in 2005, largely as a consequence of the outpouring of sympathy for victims of Hurricane Katrina and the Asian Tsunami. The annual Giving USA study, which comes out this morning, reports that Americans gave $260.3 billion last year to charitable causes, a little shy of the all-time record, $260.5 billion. Less encouraging: Giving to healthcare-related causes is down about 1 percent. Contributions to environmental and religious causes, meanwhile, continue to increase.
