Following a state investigation, UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central gave up a waiver allowing it to treat seriously ill or injured adult patients at its pediatric emergency room, and will take control of its inpatient pediatric hospital from Children's Hospital Colorado in June, The Gazette reported. The two-month investigation by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services found "inconsistencies and areas of concern," according to Larry Wolk, Department of Public Health executive director and chief medical officer. The investigation focused on the process and structure of care of the inpatient hospital operated by Children's inside of Memorial. The two hospitals' staff-sharing processes, the report found, were not in line with state regulations. Memorial's 2009 waiver allowed staff to treat "Level I" pediatric emergencies, but after surrendering the waiver they will only be allowed to treat less serious injuries. Children's interim CEO Jena Hausmann said the investigation did not concern quality of care and that changes were "in the underlying operational structure to bring consistency in how the regulations want patient care provided."
