The California Department of Public Health fined 12 Golden State hospitals nearly $800,000 for causing or risking death and serious injuries to patients, San Jose Mercury News reports. The department's investigation found two of seven patient deaths occurred at Seton Medical Center in Daly City and Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, both of which it fined $50,000. The department has long levied fines of $50,000 for first violations, $75,000 for second violations and $100,000 for any further ones, but as of last April, each maximum penalty increased $25,000, meaning a hospital with more than two violations faces fines of up to $125,000.
