Beth Israel with new CEO eyes partnerships

Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center yesterday announced its new CEO and President, Dr. Kevin Tabb, according to a press release. Reports hint that Beth Israel, as one of the leading hospitals in the country, will pursue partnerships with hospitals and physician groups. Earlier this summer, reports specifically named Burlington's Lahey Clinic a possible merger partner.

Although he declined to comment about Beth Israel's initial talks with Lahey, Tabb said, "This is the most competitive market in the country, and we need to be ready for change,'' according to a Boston Globe article. "It's clear to me we're going to have to form partnerships, that's one of the very first things I'll be working on.''

What else will the CEO bring to the new role? Tabb is currently the chief medical officer at Stanford Hospital and Clinics in California and worked on physician networking strategies and clinical and patient initiatives, according to the press release. He also previously served as chief quality officer and is credited with transforming quality performance at Stanford, reports the Globe.

As FierceHealthIT previously reported, the "IT geek" could serve one of the most renowned teaching hospitals well, boosting BIDMC's technology profile even further. At Stanford, Tabb was integral to implementing electronic medical records.

Tabb will take on his new role on Oct. 17.
