Assault case shines light on hospital patient privacy, social media policies

Lansdale (Pennsylvania) Hospital, part of the Abington Health system, has fired an emergency room technician who posted pictures of patient X-rays and two severed fingers and described different patients in her Twitter account, according to insurancenews.net via the Philadelphia Inquirer. Hospital officials discovered the postings following her arrest for an attack on a gay couple. The day before terminating Kathryn Knott, the system released a statement that she was suspended due to the nature of charges against her, saying it was investigating whether she violated patient privacy and the organization's social media policy. "Any story like this needs to a reminder to everybody working in the field … about the importance of protecting patient information," Lauren Steinfeld, chief privacy officer for Penn Medicine, told the publication.
