AMA won't push for DTC ad ban

The American Medical Association voted to not to support legislation which would impose a moratorium on pharma company ads targeting consumers. A committee will now study the issues involved. The organization also voted to oppose laws which "presume patients would want medical treatment" in response to the medical end of life issues raised by the Schiavo case. The doctors' group also came out against strict new labeling requirements for antidepressants, saying warnings may confuse patients. The group will petition the FDA to review the matter.
