About 1 in 3 jobs are vacant at 9 regional Veterans Affairs' health systems

About one in three jobs are vacant at nine of the regional Veterans Affairs healthcare systems in the United States, leaving veterans weeks to get care, USA Today reports. Nationally, nearly 41,000 positions--for critical intake workers, doctors, nurses and assistants--were unfilled as of mid-July, due partly to complex hiring procedures and poor recruitment, said critics of the nation's network of 139 hospitals and clinics that treat veterans, according to the article. Meanwhile, more than a year after the scandal involving secret waitlists and care delays within the Department of Veterans Affairs first broke, nearly a third of the veterans that are in the total backlog have already died, FierceHealthcare reported in July.
