Blue Button, launched in the summer of 2010, assembles a patient's record into a single, portable file. The file can be used with a growing number of electronic health record systems, including those used by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, Medicare, and private companies including Kaiser Permanente, Aetna and UnitedHealth Group.
The Blue Button personal health record includes prescription history, the ability to review past appointments and medical history, wellness reminders and emergency contact information.
As of last summer, more than 1 million patients had registered to use Blue Button to access and download their personal health record information.
In January, the VA added enhanced features, including giving veterans access to the VA Continuity of Care Document. What's more, the iBlueButton mobile app can be used on an iPhone or iPad. It's making its debut in the U.K. this fall.
