Regions Hospital first in the country to have palliative care program certified

Palliative care program emphasizes care and quality of life for patients with serious illness

ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Regions Hospital’s palliative care program has become the first program in the county to be certified by The Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization which accredits and certifies health care organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards.

Regions earned this distinction following an on-site review of the hospital’s palliative care program. To receive certification, Regions demonstrated that its program provides exceptional patient and family-centered care for patients with serious illness, with an emphasis on pain and symptom management and quality of life.

“Our goal in obtaining this certification was to raise the bar for the level of service we provide to our patients with serious illnesses and their families,” says Jim Risser, MD, a HealthPartners Medical Group physician and medical director for Regions Hospital palliative care team. “We’re excited to be leaders in this important and growing area of patient care.”

Regions Hospital has had an inpatient palliative care unit since 2005 and has been a pilot site for Joint Commission palliative care certification since 2008. The standards for certification were officially released in June, and Regions was one of only five hospitals nationally that immediately applied. During the on-site survey, a palliative care expert attended patient care rounds, reviewed patient medical records, spoke with the nursing staff on various units and talked with the families of three patients.
