Patricia McKinney at Valley Medical Center Earns Customer Excellence Award for Most Productive Use of Automation Technolog

Boston WorkStation Saves Thousands of Dollars and Hundreds of Hours by Automating Claims Processing and Patient Insurance Verification

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Boston Software Systems® today named Patricia McKinney, application analyst at Valley Medical Center of Renton, WA, the winner of Boston Software Systems’ Fifth Annual User Excellence Award. This honor recognizes McKinney for her successful and innovative use of Boston WorkStation® to automate Medicaid claims processing and insurance verification. As a result, Valley Medical Center (VMC) has been able to save the staff hundreds of hours and tens of thousands of dollars.

Over the past two years, McKinney has developed more than 20 scripts to automate manual tasks throughout VMC. The two for which she has received the award show particular value in the claims and billing departments. The first one involves unpaid Medicaid claims which VMC receives from the Washington State Department of Social & Health Services once a week. Boston WorkStation converts the 500-page .pdf file containing 1,700 claims to a text file, parses the text file to extract the claims in progress and enters them into VMC’s hospital billing system, McKesson Star. This process enables the billing department to correct claims quickly and effectively, and realize savings of 16 hours per week and $13,000 per year.

McKinney also uses Boston WorkStation to download two reports containing insurance verification information from an Allscripts PayerPath web application. Boston WorkStation then connects to VMC’s clinical billing application, Allscripts Misys Vision, and updates the insurance verification date for patients in the downloaded files. The number of patients updated varies from 200 to 2,000 throughout the month. When done manually, this process took two to three full-time employees 80 to 120 hours per week to accomplish. Boston WorkStation is processing 180 records per hour and saving the hospital $75,000 per year.

“As I accomplish more tasks in less time for the billing and claims areas, other departments at Valley Medical Center are seeing the value of automation and asking me to develop scripts for them,” said McKinney. “I have two machines each running Boston WorkStation with 20 scripts daily. I am always looking for new ways to use Boston WorkStation to afford us more time and money savings. The support Boston Software Systems provides is fabulous; I wouldn’t be as effective without it.”

“Valley Medical Center is another example of Boston WorkStation’s versatility in helping organizations accomplish a variety of critical workflow automation tasks,” said Steve Cohen, executive vice president of Boston Software Systems. “Organizations are striving to be more efficient with their human resources and have realized the benefits of technology to automate manual processes. We are proud to partner with our customers so that they may get the most value out of Boston WorkStation in order to control costs and improve productivity.”

Valley Medical Center (VMC) is the largest nonprofit healthcare provider between Seattle and Tacoma, serving more than 400,000 residents.
