Medic One Paramedic to Throw Ceremonial First Pitch at Mariners Game on Sept. 14 alongside Girl He Saved
A portion of proceeds from tickets purchased through a special online offer will benefit the Medic One Foundation
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Phil Pierson, a Bellevue firefighter, paramedic and recipient of the Medic One Foundation’s “Spirit of Team Play Award,” will throw out the first pitch at the Mariners game on Wednesday, Sept. 14. Pierson will throw out the first pitch alongside a nine-year-old girl he helped save after she suffered life-threatening injuries in a boating accident.
Lily James, the Mercer Island girl who will join Pierson on the mound, is an example of the Medic One Foundation’s value. For nearly four decades, the Medic One Foundation has ensured the quality of our region’s pre-hospital emergency care system by funding world-class paramedic training, innovative research in new methods of patient care, and intensive medical review of paramedic performance.
In July 2009, James nearly drowned and her feet were almost severed when an inflatable on her family’s boat flew off and she was caught in the tow rope. A series of surgeries have once again given Lily full use of her feet, but paramedics, including Pierson, treating her on the dock of the Mercer Island Beach Club the day of the accident kept her alive.
The Foundation’s Spirit of Team Play Award is presented annually to a Puget Sound paramedic who exemplifies integrity, teamwork and compassion. Coworkers nominated Pierson this year and last for his many years of providing emergency medical skills and CPR training, both for the public and other paramedics.
Special group seating has been reserved for the Sept. 14 Mariners game against the New York Yankees, and is available for purchase at www.mariners.com/mediconefoundation. A portion of the proceeds from tickets purchased through this offer will benefit the Medic One Foundation.
