Maricopa Integrated Health System Chooses HP Autonomy to Streamline Data Backup and Recovery

Arizona hospital system saves $400,000, cuts backup time from 78 to 10 hours with HP Autonomy

PALO ALTO, Calif., March 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- HP Autonomy today announced that Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS) has selected HP Data Protector and HP StoreOnce to meet its data protection and disaster recovery needs.

Located in Maricopa County, Ariz., MIHS has nearly 20,000 inpatient admissions and 350,000 outpatient admissions a year. MIHS is inundated with large quantities of data, all of which needs to be protected to ensure operational excellence and meet government regulations that require the hospital to back up its data offsite. With HP Data Protector and HP StoreOnce, MIHS can now streamline its data backup and recovery process while fulfilling its regulatory and compliance obligations.

MIHS found that it was much more cost effective to deploy two HP StoreOnce solutions—one at the hospital's primary location and one at its disaster recovery site—as opposed to extending its previous solution to meet MIHS' data recovery requirements. In doing so, MIHS immediately saved $400,000.

Additionally, MIHS has seen a dramatic reduction in the time it takes to perform backups due to the robust deduplication capabilities of HP StoreOnce. What used to take 78 hours to complete a full backup of a file system, now only takes 10 hours.

The HP StoreOnce solution also requires less rack space than the previous system MIHS was using, which enabled the organization to take advantage of considerable power and cooling reductions.

"MIHS needed a solution that would expand our data protection system to cover disaster recovery and improve the speed and efficiency of backups," said Derek McConnell, infrastructure architect, Maricopa Integrated Health System. "HP Autonomy solutions are saving MIHS time and money, and providing me with the confidence that in the event of a data center outage, we still have access to all of our crucial data. That peace of mind is priceless."

"Due to the explosion of data in the medical industry combined with increasing regulatory and compliance obligations, hospitals require central and comprehensive systems in place to manage highly demanding data recovery and backup requirements," said David Jones, general manager, Data Protection, HP Autonomy. "With HP Autonomy's data protection solutions, MIHS save precious time and money, while ensuring that all patient data is safe and secure."

HP Data Protector leverages HP Autonomy's Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL), enabling organizations to deploy a meaning-based data-protection solution that uses an intelligent data management approach to optimize recovery, search and compliance. The combination of HP Data Protector and HP StoreOnce's deduplication capabilities creates a seamless solution that enables companies to save time, minimize infrastructure costs and reduce the complexity of backup.
