John Muir Medical Center, Concord Earns Highest Honor for Nursing Excellence

CONCORD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association, has honored John Muir Medical Center, Concord with Magnet® recognition status for excellence in nursing services and quality nursing care. The Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes health care organizations that demonstrate excellence and adherence to national standards for the organization and delivery of nursing services. Magnet recognition is the highest level of recognition that the ANCC can accord to a health care organization and honors the nursing service at John Muir Medical Center, Concord as one of the best in the nation.

“This achievement recognizes the outstanding care our nurses provide every day to our patients and the high level of care available at our medical center,” Mike Thomas, president and CAO of John Muir Medical Center, Concord. “Patients and their families should have a high level of confidence when they come here that they will receive expert care from our professional, knowledgeable and caring nurses, physicians and staff.”

In the East Bay, John Muir Medical Center, Concord joins John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek (honored in 2008) as the only hospitals to achieve Magnet recognition status. John Muir Health’s medical centers are two of just four hospitals in Northern California to receive this distinction and two of 21 to be recognized in California. In the United States, just 369 hospitals have received this honor– seven percent of the nation’s acute care hospitals. Of those 369 hospitals, only 11 percent, including John Muir Medical Center, Concord, are unionized.

“Magnet recognition at both of John Muir Health’s medical centers reflects the excellent care delivered to patients throughout our organization,” said Ken Meehan, executive vice president of Operations for John Muir Health. “Ultimately, it is our patients who benefit the most from what Magnet represents – teamwork, excellence, empowerment, patient-centered care and quality.”

To earn Magnet recognition, organizations must undergo a rigorous evaluation that includes an extensive application and review of nursing services, as well as a site visit that includes interviews with nurses, physicians, staff, administrators, board members and community members.

“The journey to achieve Magnet recognition has transformed our hospital and is a tribute to the incredible team of professional nurses that care for our patients, as well as the care and support of our physicians and staff. Together, we have created an environment that promotes high standards of practice and professionalism,” said Donna Brackley, R.N., senior vice president of Patient Care Services. “Throughout this process, we have also benefitted greatly from the support of our sister facility John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek, as well as our board of directors and senior administrators who provide a structure that supports and values nursing and sets high standards for patient care, quality and service. The five-year effort to achieve this honor required the talent, teamwork, and sustained effort of both leadership and front-line nurses, which led to this outstanding organizational achievement.”

Research has demonstrated that Magnet hospitals offer a number of benefits to patients, including:

  • Improved care environments for patients and families
  • Better patient, physician and staff satisfaction
  • Patient-centered care with patients and families treated as partners
  • Reduced mortality
  • Lower registered nurse turnover and vacancy rates
  • More highly educated and qualified nursing staff

Magnet recognition is granted for four years and requires John Muir Medical Center, Concord to submit annual reports about continuing activities. Evidence of continuing progress and excellence is validated every four years to receive Magnet re-designation.
