WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- John Muir Health’s non-profit medical group, the John Muir Physician Network, is now participating in Blue Shield of California’s (Blue Shield) CalPERS NetValue HMO program in Contra Costa County. The program’s rates and benefit provisions will take effect on January 1, 2012.
As part of the health benefits rate package, Blue Shield will expand its NetValue plan into Contra Costa County using the John Muir Physician Network, making the lower-cost plan available to 9,200 Blue Shield Access+ members currently with John Muir Health and another 5,000 with other providers at monthly premiums below what state employees will pay for the Kaiser HMO plan.
In order to participate in the NetValue HMO network, medical groups must meet or exceed quality standards based on nationally-recognized quality metrics and meet basic cost efficiency criteria. The John Muir Physician Network was recently rated in the 95th percentile for overall quality of care, service and patient satisfaction among all medical groups in California. It includes 925 primary care and specialty physicians throughout Contra Costa County.
“We look forward to providing high quality care for public employees, retirees and their families residing in Contra Costa County as a part of Blue Shield CalPERS NetValue HMO,” said Mitchell Zack, Vice President of Employer and Payor Relations for John Muir Health. “John Muir Health and its Physician Network are committed to expanding access to quality care at an affordable cost.”
John Muir Health offers a full-range of medical services, including primary care, outpatient, lab and imaging services, and is widely recognized as a leader in many specialties – neurosciences, orthopedic, cancer, cardiovascular, emergency and high-risk obstetrics care. CalPERS Net Value HMO members will have access to John Muir Health's two hospitals, which opened $800 million in new expansion projects recently, and were ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the No. 2 and No. 3 highest performing hospitals out of 44 facilities in the San Francisco metropolitan area. Both hospitals also received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's prestigious "Get With The Guidelines" Triple Gold Performance Achievement Award for treatment and discharge of patients with coronary artery disease, stroke and heart failure. In addition, both hospitals are designated as Magnet facilities for excellence in nursing care, two of just four in Northern California and 17 in the state.
CalPERS is the largest purchaser of public employee health benefits in California, and the second largest public purchaser in the nation after the federal government. It spends approximately $7 billion a year to provide care to active and retired state and local government employees, retirees and their family members.
