CPPR spokesman Dr. Donald Palmisano encourages Congress to repeal the Independent Payment Advisory Board next

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Coalition to Protect Patients’ Rights (CPPR) spokesman, Dr. Donald J. Palmisano, today applauded Congress for voting to repeal the Affordable Care Act’s 1099 provision.

“The Affordable Care Act’s 1099 provision will place a massive paperwork burden on doctors’ offices around the country,” said Dr. Palmisano. “These establishments already waste far too many resources facilitating the bureaucracy and paperwork necessary to defend their practices from junk-lawsuits. If the provision is repealed and the President addresses our country’s broken medical malpractice system like he recently said he would, we will be on the right track to ensuring that doctors can once again focus on providing quality care for patients.”

The 1099 provision is slated to take effect in 2012, and requires businesses to file IRS reports for all payments of $600 or more made to vendors.

Dr. Palmisano sees Congress’ efforts to repeal the 1099 provision as a positive step towards repealing the most egregious provisions in the health care bill.

“The Senate’s repeal of 1099 indicates that American lawmakers finally are beginning to acknowledge that the Affordable Care Act is severely flawed and needs to be fixed. Hopefully they will now prioritize the repeal of the Independent Payment Advisory Board, which could empower a panel of 15 unelected bureaucrats to cut billions of dollars from the already cash-strapped Medicare program annually.” He added, “And don’t forget the solution to the current mandatory price-fixing that limits access to care: allow patients and physicians to privately contract and thus restore liberty in contracting.”

CPPR worked hard to achieve patient-centered health care reform during the course of the health care debate, staunchly opposing the Affordable Care Act which we believe undermined the greatest health care system in the world instead of building upon it.
