Florida Obstetric and Gynecologic Society Installs Andrew M. Kaunitz, MD, as President

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Andrew M. Kaunitz, MD, was installed as President by the Florida Obstetric and Gynecologic Society (FOGS) at the organization’s annual meeting, Pathways to Clinical Excellence, held August 6-8 at the Fontainebleau Hotel.

As President, Dr. Kaunitz will provide leadership for the nonprofit association, which represents more than 900 physician and resident members in Florida and provides continuing education for healthcare professionals to advance patient care in the realm of women's health.

Dr. Kaunitz serves as a tenured Professor and Associate Chair for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville. He also is Director for Menopause and Gynecologic Ultrasound Services at UF–Southside Women’s Specialists at Emerson.

He consults with the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the CDC in the preparation of publications and guidelines concerning contraception. He has served as chairman for the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, and as chairman of the Professional Education Committee of the North American Menopause Society. He is Editor-In-Chief for the medical journal, Watch Women’s Health, and is an expert advisor for Medscape OB/GYN and Women’s Health. Dr. Kaunitz also serves on the editorial boards of Ob/Gyn Management, Contraception, Pause (a magazine devoted to menopause and published by ACOG), and several newsletters.

Dr. Kaunitz is frequently interviewed on women’s health topics by magazines including Self, Redbook, and Ladies Home Journal and, in May 2010, appeared on The Today Show regarding oral contraception. He has made presentations to FDA Advisory Committees regarding injectable and oral contraception and has authored or coauthored numerous chapters. Dr. Kaunitz has published more than 250 articles in journals including The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Contraception, and the Journal of Adolescent Health.

After receiving his medical degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Kaunitz completed his Ob/Gyn Residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. After his residency, Dr. Kaunitz served as an Epidemic Intelligence Officer in the Division of Reproductive Health at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
