First Lady Michelle Obama and Secretary Sebelius Announce National Challenge to Get Americans Moving

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- On Tuesday, September 14, First Lady Michelle Obama, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN) Co-Chair Dominique Dawes will launch the Million Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) Challenge to get one million or more Americans of all ages to sign up for and achieving the PALA.

PALA is for people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities and is a great way to jumpstart or maintain a healthy lifestyle by engaging in moderate to intense physical activity for 60 minutes a day, five days per week over six weeks for kids, and 30 minutes a day over the same period of time for adults. The Million PALA Challenge is being launched during National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, as designated by President Obama’s signing of a proclamation on September 1, 2010, and kicks off the start of the 2010-2011 school year. The challenge will run from September 2010-September 2011.
