The Company Doctor a Thing of the Past? Maybe Not

New York, January 21, 2011--At least one company is attempting to bring back the concept of a medical presence in the workplace, through the use of remote patient technology, according to healthcare market research publisher Kalorama Information. As noted in its report, Remote and Wireless Patient Monitoring Systems, this is just one of many uses of innovative technologies that will propel growth in these systems over $6 billion this year.

"With increased waiting times at doctors' offices, some employees may have to take a sick or personal day to see the physician for what might be a routine visit," said Bruce Carlson, publisher of Kalorama Information. "Technology might help avoid that scenario."

In the past, larger companies may have had company physicians or nurses that were responsible for the company's work force, until costs became a concern that outweighed the long-term advantages. Now it is rare for a company to offer this benefit. According to Kalorama Information's report, one company, NuPhysicia uses video telemedicine to connect board-certified doctors with employee patients for examinations, diagnoses, medical care and wellness coaching. The company asserts that its service can minimize sick days for employees and improve efficiency.

"The remote company doctor idea is just one of many innovative approaches using PM technology, in addition to the remote home doctor visit," said Carlson. "These types of innovations fit well with the needs of healthcare and are driving growth in the remote patient wireless systems market."

Kalorama Information predicts 26% annual growth in the remote and wireless patient monitoring market through 2014 in its report, which is a fairly high growth rate for healthcare device markets.

Remote and Wireless Patient Monitoring Systems, covers many products on the market, provides long-term market forecasts and profiles key companies in the field. Information on this report can be obtained at: http://www.kaloramainformation.com/redirect.asp?progid=80332&productid=2645944.
