Anaheim General Hospital Receives Full Accreditation from the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program

ANAHEIM, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Anaheim General Hospital announced today that it has received full accreditation from the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP), one of only three national voluntary accreditation programs authorized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to survey hospitals for compliance with the Medicare conditions of participation and coverage.

To earn full accreditation, the highest level of accreditation given by HFAP, Anaheim General Hospital had to meet the HFAP accreditation requirements in all performance areas and undergo a comprehensive survey, which can occur at any time and without prior notice every three years. The HFAP team conducted a rigorous, unannounced survey at Anaheim General Hospital in December 2010. HFAP-accredited hospitals receive the HFAP Seal of Excellence, which confirms patient safety.

“Achieving full accreditation from HFAP is an important milestone and another affirmation of our continuing commitment to provide our patients with safe and quality care,” said Thomas Salerno, President and CEO of Anaheim General Hospital, a general medical and surgical hospital with 142 beds. The hospital’s 245-physician medical staff represents 22 specialties. “By demonstrating compliance with the most stringent standards of patient care, this official approval by HFAP is further recognition that Anaheim General Hospital offers patients the most consistent high-quality, best-value healthcare across all settings.”

“This accomplishment represents a significant turnaround for your facility and its reestablishment as a provider of healthcare to your community,” said George A. Reuther, Chief Operating Officer of HFAP, in a letter to the hospital. “As your accreditation organization we were pleased to be a part of this transformation and we stand ready to support you and your staff in achieving and maintaining compliance with standards that reflect an environment of high quality care and safety for your patients.”

According to Salerno, the HFAP team that surveyed the hospital recognized the many new clinical, quality and safety systems that have been implemented at Anaheim General. “Designing these new patient safety systems, quality protocols and clinical best practices and implementing them through rigorous staff training programs has been the top priority of the new leadership team at Anaheim General Hospital, in partnership with our clinical staff,” he said.

“This accreditation would not have been possible without the compassion and dedication to excellence embodied by every employee at Anaheim General Hospital,” Salerno added. “The Anaheim General Hospital board, administration, medical staff and employees work as a team to provide the highest quality of healthcare to our community, and achieving this accreditation demonstrates that team work and compassion.”

“In achieving HFAP accreditation, Anaheim General Hospital has demonstrated its commitment to the highest level of care for its patients,” said Adriana Velasco, BSRN, MSRN, MPH, the hospital’s Chief Nursing Officer. “I commend the employees and medical staff of Anaheim General Hospital for successfully undertaking this challenge to elevate its standard of care and instill confidence in the community we serve.”

“Full accreditation is a significant achievement,” said Sharon Fitzgerald, Patient Safety Officer and Director of Quality/Risk Management at Anaheim General. “We have worked diligently to improve our hospital and the care we provide. I am proud of the commitment by our employees and the physicians on our medical staff to deliver a high standard of care.”
