Amgen’s Prolia Has the Potential to Steal a Prominent Share of the Osteoporosis Market

Majestic Research Study Indicates Physicians Are Enthusiastic about Prolia’s Infrequent Dosing Regimen, but Have Concerns about the High Cost of Therapy

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- A study published this week by Majestic Research found that physicians plan to ramp up use of Amgen’s Prolia in spite of pricing and reimbursement concerns. According to the report entitled, Event Pulse: Launch of Prolia, physicians are enthusiastic about Prolia’s convenient dosing regimen and are optimistic that the drug will yield greater patient compliance and therefore better disease outcomes. “So far, we view Prolia’s launch and future outlook in the osteoporosis space as very promising,” said Karen Cundari, lead healthcare equity research analyst at Majestic Research. “Real-time data from our proprietary physician panel already shows impressive market share gains for Prolia among specialists as well as general practitioners.”

However, physicians did express concerns about the high price of Prolia relative to competing osteoporosis products. When asked about barriers to future use of Prolia, 67% of surveyed physicians indicated that they expect Prolia’s high cost to be an issue. Unlike existing osteoporosis brands, Prolia’s “buy and bill” supply model will inflict a heavier initial cost burden on physicians as they will be required to purchase and store Prolia before they administer it to patients and submit claims to payors for reimbursement.

Added Cundari, “Despite pricing and coverage issues around Prolia, we are encouraged by the degree to which Managed Care Organizations have already embraced Prolia.” According to Majestic’s interviews with pharmacy benefit managers at 10 managed care organizations, Prolia is viewed as more expensive relative to other osteoporosis therapies, but planned reimbursement restrictions for Prolia will not be any more stringent than those required for the other branded agents. Furthermore, the majority of interviewed managed care organizations have already added the drug to their formularies.

Event Pulse: Launch of Prolia includes analysis of a targeted Internet survey of 50 primary care physicians and 50 rheumatologists, 10 in-depth telephone interviews with pharmacy directors at major managed care organizations, and proprietary longitudinal treatment data from a panel of 2,000 primary care physicians, 130 endocrinologists, and 110 rheumatologists spanning 2005-2010. Conducted in September 2010, the report provides an in-depth look at how Prolia’s entrance into the osteoporosis market will impact the existing players in the space.

The qualitative portion examines the current reimbursement climate for existing osteoporosis drugs, as well as the anticipated response to Prolia’s price by major managed care organizations.
