National organ transplant system flawed?

Apparently, the problems facing Kaiser Permanente's kidney transplant center aren't unique. In a follow-up to its expose of conditions at Kaiser's San Francisco transplant center, the Los Angeles Times reports that the transplant program faces major challenges at the national level. According to the story, the odds of getting a transplant vary tremendously depending on where you live. In fact, the current system no longer allocates organs according to need. "Nothing forces organ-rich territories to share," the Times says. "As a result, the system has evolved into a collection of self-interested fiefdoms, some blessed, some wanting."
