A new study by RAND Corp., Seattle Children's Hospital Research Institute and the University of Washington School of Medicine has reached the sobering conclusion that children may be getting worse care than adults. To draw these conclusions, researchers looked at records from more than 1,500 children selected randomly across 12 metropolitan regions, evaluating care on 175 measures of quality covering 12 clinical areas.

Less than half of the children studied (41 percent) were getting recommended preventive care, 53 percent were getting recommended care for chronic conditions, and 68 percent were getting recommended care for acute medical problems.
