More young people becoming nurses but struggle to get hired; Cleveland Clinic opens $98M health center;

> More young people are becoming nurses, adding optimism to the looming provider shortage. According to a new study from the RAND Corporation, Vanderbilt University, and Dartmouth College, the number 23- to 26-year olds who became registered nurses jumped by 62 percent from 2002 to 2009. Nevertheless, nursing graduates in California still find it hard to get hired, according to the Sacramento Bee.

> Despite some cautions about the rush to develop freestanding emergency rooms (ER), Christiana Care Health System in Delaware has broken ground on a freestanding ER, the system announced last month. The facility, which can treat more than 86,000 residents, will create 90 new jobs. Similarly, Poudre Valley (Colo.) Health System is planning a freestanding ER and same-day surgery center, the health system announced Friday. Poudre Valley is expecting to shell out $14.5 million to build the new facility.

> The Cleveland Clinic is opening a new $98 million, full-service health center that offers more than 30 specialty services in Avon, Ohio, reports Fox 8 News. "We have four operating rooms and four procedure rooms, and we really wanted to make it a one-stop shop for any patient's health care needs," Medical Director Dr. Joseph Knapp said. Article

> Kaiser Permanente is building another hospital in San Diego, reports the San Diego Business Journal. The nonprofit chose to put its new 350-bed acute care hospital in the Kearny Mesa community because it allows for faster construction and lower overall costs. Article
