A three-year attempt to create the largest regional health information exchange in the country appears to be biting the dust due to payment disputes. Several hospitals in Chicago have opted not to join the HIE on the grounds that the fee to join is too high. At present, only 18 out of 30 hospitals and medical groups have joined the HIE. Major systems that have not joined include Rush University Medical Center, the University of Chicago Medicine and the University of Illinois Health and Hospital Sciences System. Article
