Black Book: CPSI keeps EHR crown in small hospital market

CPSI once again is the top ranked electronic health record vendor for small, rural and critical access hospitals, according to the latest report from market research firm Black Book Rankings.

The company's latest study of 700 hospitals with fewer than 100 beds surveyed EHR users on 18 key indicators, including integration success, productivity improvements, Meaningful Use achievements, quality outcomes, interoperability and accountable care support. CPSI led the field, the fourth year in a row it earned top honors. Other inpatient EHR vendors that earned high marks out of a field of 100 included Allscripts, Cerner, Epic Systems and GE Healthcare..

The firm noted that the hospitals are turning to more complex EHR implementations and support to integrate acquired physician practices.

"Hospital leaders are seeking empirical data from EHR users to make informed vendor choices, particularly those switching systems or replacing home grown EHRs," Doug Brown, managing partner of Black Book Rankings, said in an announcement. Viable EHR vendors are actively supporting their clients past implementation, and demonstrating best-of-breed technologies through innovative solutions."

The report showed disparities between inpatient and ambulatory EHR vendors. A survey of physician practices from KLAS Research published last spring found Epic, athenahealth and Greenway are on top while, Allscripts, McKesson and Vitera had the highest percentage of unhappy customers.

Black Book plans to release its EHR rankings for community hospitals and academic medical centers later this month.
